The Earth's climate is in constant change. The climate of the Earth has changed over millions of years with ice ages, long warming periods, volcanic eruptions, orbital changes, and energy changes in the Sun. Beginning in the 18th century with the Industrial Revolution, humans have significantly contributed to the composition of the Earth's atmosphere. All these things are influencing the Earth's climate. Human activities has increased significantly the amount of gasses in the atmosphere
Greenhouse
gases include water vapor, CO2, methane, nitrous oxide (N2O) and other gases.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases turn like a blanket, gripping Infrared
radiation and preventing it from escaping into outer space. The ability of
certain gases, greenhouse gases, to be transparent to inbound visible light
from the sun, yet opaque to the energy radiated from the earth is one of the
best still events in the atmospheric sciences. The existence of greenhouse
effect is what makes the earth a comfortable place for life.
The Greenhouse effect is a leading factor in keeping the Earth warm because
it keeps some of the planet's heat that would otherwise escape from the
atmosphere out to space. Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth's average
global temperature would be much colder and life on Earth as we know it would
be impossible. However, the levels of carbon dioxide and other "greenhouse
gases" in the atmosphere are increasing, more and more of the heat
radiated by the earth's surface may become trapped in the atmosphere. This may
result in "global warming," or the gradual warming of the atmosphere
around the world.
Another
source of carbon dioxide is the clearing of rain forests in countries near the
equator. The burning of tropical trees to clear land for crops releases carbon
dioxide to the atmosphere. At the same time, trees that use carbon dioxide for
photosynthesis are being destroyed.
What Will the Greenhouse Effect Do? No one can
predict the impacts of the increasing levels of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere, but the big impact is changes in weather patterns.
Global warming also may cause sea level to rise. The oceans
are storehouses of heat. By storing some of the increased heat, ocean
temperatures will rise, causing them to expand. It have disastrous effects on
many natural habitats and the plants and animals that live in them.
Warmer temperatures will be greater in winter. Tropical storms may become more severe or hit land in different places. Areas that now receive plenty of rain for crops may suffer more droughts.
